I've had the pleasure of meeting the famous Mr Edge in U2's Dublin studio, and even playing some of his guitars.

How did that come about Geoff?

Without trying to sound like Edge's PR....!

U2 "Van Dieman's Land" live by Edge, solo. 1990. AGain, Jimmy Page is not like this. Jack White COULD do it, but not as gracefully. They are all different.

Three/four chords turned into church bells.

"when to play 2 notes when many would chose 4+".

That's exactly why I've become such a fan in recent years. I grew up playing heavy metal, trying to play as fast and flashy as possible as were most other people at that time. It was all about out-gunning each other with flashy tricks and outrageous speed.

Took me years (decades) to get the idea that 'less really is more' and that doing what is best for the song is really what it's all about.

I think his solo in 'One' is a great example of that. How many guitarists would have the taste and restraint to play as little as he did on that track?

Geoff

My sentiments also, just becuase he is different, doesnt make him bad.

I too play a bit and consider myself to be competent but lazy.
It doesnt matter what effects you use, if you cant play it will always sound shit. When I got my first Cray baby, it sounded fucking awful for ages, until I began using it properly.

"until The End Of The Wolrd" on U2 Go Home / Slane Castle DVD is jawdropping.

I've had the pleasure of meeting the famous Mr Edge in U2's Dublin studio, and even playing some of his guitars. And yes, he is a charming guy. Surprisingly funny and self-deprecating.

His rack is like something out of NASA. Even he doesn't understand it all, his tech Dallas Schoo maintains it all and saves the sounds Edge has found....

I'm no massive U2 fan, but get irritated when people say he "can't play." I play guitar, and could never do what he does (rhythm, sounds, when to play 2 notes when many would chose 4+). PLaying with delay requires superb syncopation, melodic sense and discipline. He's got it nailed. That's why he is unique.

It Might Get Loud is a good film for all guitar players. I must watch it again. But to suggest, re the OP, that Edge was "out of his depth" is nonsense. He's swimming in a different ocean. That's all.

Nice clip. I love Until The End Of The World. One of the highlights of recent tours IMO.

Here's another clip that I really like. A side to him not all will have seen?

Edge can't play like Jimmy Page. But Jimmy Page can't do this, either. Vive la difference.

HairySpotter 2:23 Fri Sep 5 – It’s true. I think it happened more than once. Apparently many people weren’t sure whether it was part of the show or not, the whole production being so over the top.

Re: It Might Get Loud - Jimmy Page, Jack Black and The Edge
As some here - Bungo partic - have said, Dave "The Edge" Evans is misunderstood.

Page and White are essentially traditionalists - reworking old songs and riffs, albeit with skill. Edge was always a futurist. He never wanted to be a "blues rocker" but wanted to discover how technology could help him make new sounds. He does that very well. He has a unique sound/style, which is half the battle in art, IMHO. He's not "better" or "worse" than Jimmy Page, he's just different.

"Not the biggest u2 fan but i do like Discoteque..."

I found that whole 'Pop' era really interesting. mostly because I had no idea what they were shooting for with that album.

It's grown on me over the years and I really tracks like Discotheche, Mofo, Gone (especially) and Last Night On Earth.

If you haven't seen it, the Popmart live DVD from that tour is really good. Includes the unusual sight of the band not taking themselves at seriously, wearing very silly stage outfits, and at one point heading right into Spinal Tap territory by emerging from a giant motorised lemon!

Achtung Baby remains my favourite U2 album overall, but I would say they have still produced many quality moments on all albums since. Stay, Kite, Walk On, City Of Blinding Lights, Breathe, Magnificent and Moment of Surrender being a few of my more recent faves.

Frankly, very few bands that have been going for as long as U2, still produce any new material of any value. I respect them for refusing to become a ‘greatest hits’ band that just tours the old favourites every few years.

No, I haven’t.

But I’ll heed your rules on the not being allowed to think U2’s music is shit bit, apologies for having my own taste.

"Funny a lot of his peers rate the Edge .... yet the wacky world of WHO think he is shit..."

This is because a lot of people (on a whole range of subjects they often know very little about), are only able to phrase the slightly sophisticated thought:-

"I myself am not a fan of this individual or group of individuals artistic endeavours, however perhaps they actually have some skill or talent that I am not fully able to appreciate perhaps due to my own limited understanding',

as

'He's shit'.
